“Everyone at Nonprofits Assistance Fund is knowledgeable and accessible. The staff is there to answer our questions or point us in the right direction”

Julie Guy, Director at Sojourner Truth Academy

Sojourner Truth Academy is a Pre K - 8th grade charter school in North Minneapolis that sets high expectations to prepare their students for high school and college academically, behaviorlly and socially. With 95% of its student body eligible for free or reduced-priced lunch, STA works hard to reverse the effects of poverty. By integrating parental participation, STA is able to build a strong support network for students.

Sojourner Truth Academy started working with Nonprofits Assistance Fund under the LEAD for Charters Program in 2005. Through this program, STA led the efforts to form a peer network of financial managers with other grantees. Nonprofits Assistance Fund maintains a strong relationship with STA, providing regular financial technical assistance and board trainings on finance and governance. Last fiscal year, Nonprofits Assistance Fund provided techinical assistance on a wide range of topics, from board development to assistance with audits. STA sees Nonprofits Assistance as a knowledgeable ally. When the tornado hit North Minneapolis in May 2011, Julie Guy, director at Sojourner Truth Academy, knew she could call Nonprofits Assistance Fund. The school needed to repair a severely damaged roof, but the insurance company was only willing to pay 50% of the cost upfront. A loan from Nonprofits Assistance Fund provided Sojourner Truth Academy the financial resources needed for building renovations.

To manage the state budget deficit, Minnesota increased the funding shift to schools to 40% in 2011. With a much larger holdback, charter schools have scrambled to fill the gap. Nonprofits Assistance Fund’s expertise and leadership on charter school cash flow made working with the fund a positive and simple process. A line of credit paired with continued technical assistance allows Sojourner Truth Academy to remain financially strong so they can focus on providing a well-rounded and high quality education to their students.
