“With a loan from Nonprofits Assistance Fund, we were able to open The Pantry, a new facility that allowed us to provide a client choice service model to meet the needs of our community.”

Lisa Horn, Executive Director at The Open Door

The recession hit all communities hard, but in 2009 - 2010, The Open Door, the largest food shelf in Dakota County, received a 58% increase in demand. Reaching capacity in their limited office space, they needed to expand to meet the growing needs in the community.

In fall of 2010, Lisa Horn, Executive Director at The Open Door, contacted Nonprofits Assistance Fund. With the help of a facility loan, they expanded and created The Pantry. The Pantry includes a safe distribution area for staff and volunteers, a waiting area for families, a food pantry, and plenty of storage. For the first time, The Open Door could offer a client-choice service model. With this new distribution model, families can shop for their own food like they would at a grocery store, allowing them a dignified experience to make healthy choices and eliminate waste.
